POSITION: Correctional Officer

DEPARTMENT: Sheriff’s – Corrections

SALARY: $18.05 – $27.88/Hour (Starting salary negotiable depending on qualifications/experience)

JOB SUMMARY: Under general supervision of the Corrections Sergeant, controls all activities and movement of jail inmates with regard to the health, welfare and security of each prisoner.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES (Any one position does not include all of the duties listed; nor do the listed examples include all duties which may be found in positions of this class). Guards inmates in County jail. Accepts custody of inmates from arresting officers; may prepare arrest records identifying prisoners and charge assigned; receives and processes incoming prisoners; takes fingerprints and photographs of inmates; locks prisoner in cell after searching for weapons, valuables or drugs; secures inmates’ money and property; maintains control of hostile, combative, and intoxicated inmates. Conducts searches of inmates’ housing areas; visually monitors inmates’ movement and activities; delivers and picks up meal trays and other items; inspects and distributes mail to inmates; monitors visits and telephone calls; may provide first aid or other basic medical attention; prepares inmates for transportation and accompanies inmates to court or other areas of the jail facility. Responds to emergency situations (e.g., altercations, illness, injury); provides medical assistance or refers inmates to medical staff; imposes inmate disciplinary measures as necessary; restrains inmates as necessary; responds to inmates’ requests and complaints. Performs related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: This is a career ladder position; applicants will be considered for the level for which they qualify.

Correctional Officer I: High School graduation. Preference for Corrections Officer certification in the State of Utah.

Correctional Officer II: High school graduation plus at least thirty (30) months of full-time experience as a Correctional Officer, or an acceptable combination of education and experience.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: Correctional Officer I: Results from POST Entrance Exam required with application. Must be able to become certified as a Correctional Officer through the Utah Peace Officer Standards and Training Academy (POST) within twelve months of hire date; must maintain certification and complete required annual training.

Correctional Officer II: Must be certified (or certifiable) as a Correctional Officer through the Utah Peace Officer Standards and Training Academy (POST); maintain certification and complete required annual training.

Must pass the Davis County Sheriff’s Office background investigation. As part of the background investigation, the DCSO requests that all applicants submit to a pre-employment polygraph examination. Must be at least 21 years of age (State statute requirement). Must be a citizen of the United States (State statute requirement). Must pass the Davis County Sheriff’s Office Physical Fitness Standard prior to employment and for POST certification. Must participate and undertake a valid attempt in the physical fitness testing annually. Employees driving a personal or a County vehicle for job related travel must possess a valid driver license and must operate a motor vehicle in a safe manner; new employees with an out-of-state license must obtain a valid Utah Driver License within sixty (60) days of hire date (exceptions for military personnel and their dependents). Employees driving a personal vehicle while on county business must maintain the minimum vehicle liability insurance as specified in the Utah Code.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:  Davis County is a drug-free workplace.
